• ʻAlalā Field/Data Technician: Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project (MFBRP), located in Makawao, Maui. MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,834/Mon.  DUTIES:  Conducts research and management projects for the recovery of the ʻalalā (Corvus hawaiiensis) and restoration of native habitat. Conducts fieldwork to support a translocation of captive-bred ʻalalā including construction of feeding stations and release aviaries, providing supplemental food, conducting mammalian predator control and removal, outplanting, and conducting weed control at future release sites on Maui Nui, to benefit the restoration of ʻalalā (Corvus hawaiiensis). Uses radio-telemetry to resight color-banded ʻalalā and collect data on breeding, foraging, and social behavior. Conducts all operations according to all safety and research protocols, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).  Drives project vehicles both on and off road, works in and around helicopters. Completes preparations and assists with logistics for field operations. Enters field and Geographic Information System (GIS) data into computer files for information summary and reporting. Writes trip summaries from field work completed. Helps maintain databases. Maintains field equipment, field stations, and project vehicles. Organizes all professional maintenance and repair of project equipment. Assists with public outreach and education activities.   PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: 
  EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.
  EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in biological fieldwork. Experience must include radio telemetry and resighting of marked birds. Experience with one (1) or more of the following techniques: conducting mammalian predator control and removal; conducting forest bird surveys and identifying birds by sight and sound; corvid or passerine husbandry in captivity for translocations; quantifying avian food resources; invertebrate sampling. Must include experience entering data and working in remote areas.

• 4-Month Field Assistant: MFBRP is looking to hire positions to start immediately. These positions will be 4 month field assistant positions based in Olinda, Maui. Tasks to include: participating in ongoing forest bird monitoring, predator control efforts, ʻalalā release preparations, mosquito control and monitoring activities, and additional jobs TBD both in the field and at the office/base yard. Conducts all operations according to accepted safety standards and established protocols. Drives project vehicles, both on and off road, for fieldwork, and works in and around helicopters. Hikes, camps, and carries a backpack and other heavy gear in forest conditions. Assists with maintenance of field equipment, trails, and field stations. Assists with baseboard and office maintenance and maintaining project vehicles and equipment (including repair of essential tools used in the field). Assists with preparations for field operations. Assists with the entry of field data into a computer database for analysis. Most work will be performed in remote areas and will require the ability to hike long distances. Employee will be expected to camp in remote areas four to ten days at a time. Compensation: $3200/mo plus possible housing.
