On Maui, there is an immediate need to restore high-elevation forests. Many organizations are working towards recovering these important habitats. MFBRP has been working to restore native forest on the southeast slope of Haleakalā, Maui. This forest is not only beneficial for the birds, but also for our watershed, which in turn provides water for our island. Learn more about our restoration work here.
Since 2013, over 400 people participated in our “Plant a Tree” program sponsoring nearly 3,400 native trees planted in Nakula Natural Area Reserve. These plants are thriving and helping to restore this unique forest ecosystem. We appreciate the support and the volunteers who have helped to put these plants in the ground. MFBRP has planted nearly 80,000 seedlings in Nakula. We are putting a pause on our “Plant a Tree” program as we focus our staff’s efforts on mosquito control measures which are direly needed to prevent extinction of Maui’s native honeycreepers. We hope that you will continue to support our efforts to not only replant native trees, but to restore an ecosystem where there are native birds and no mosquitoes.
